Replacing the UltraPure Ballast

Click here for a printable copy

The UltraPure Ballast regulates voltage between the Printed Circuit Board and the Ozone Generator. History tells us to assume an 8-year life. Should the ballast be defective, it will damage the Ozone Generator. (And if you just bought a new generator but not a ballast, this damage is not covered under warranty.)

Luckily replacing the ballast is easy and inexpensive.

Start by turning the power off at the GFCI or the main electrical panel.

  • Start by turning off power at the GFCI.

    Step 1:

Find the white plastic connectors in the picture. Separate them from each other.

There is a white wire that goes from one of the plug halves to the PC Board. Make a note of its location and disconnect it from the Board or terminal block.

  • Step 2:

Locate the ballast inside the lower control box, on the left side wall. The ballast in this picture is gold in color. A white version of this ballast is also common.

There is a black wire that goes from the ballast directly to the PC Board. Make a note of its location and disconnect it from the Board.

Remove the 2 small screws holding the ballast in place and set them aside.

You will need to reuse the screws!

  • Step 3:

Screw the new ballast in place. This new design has an LED instead of the old starter bulb which looked like it had burnt out.

  • Step 4:

Reattach the 2 white plastic connectors.

Next, referring to your earlier notes, attach the new white and black wires onto the PC Board or terminal block.

  • Step 5:

Move the ballast wires on the left side of the Circuit Board out of contact with any other electrical components. Failure to do this could cause an electrical short and damage your spa’s system.

Turn the power on again at the GFCI or the main electrical panel.

Within a minute both ends of the new ozone generator should glow lightly. In bright sunlight this will barely be visible. The LED, however is a little easier to see, and when lit, indicates there is a continuous flow of power through the ballast and Ozone Generator.

Congratulations! Your Ozone Generator is operating again; providing clear, clean water for your spa.

If your Ozone Generator is over 2 years old, it’s past its prime and needs replacing. Give us a call for more details.
