Replacing a Faulty Air Check Valve

Leaks sometimes occur in older air check valves. They must be replaced to ensure normal jet performance and protect the equipment area of your spa from water damage. Your spa has one-to-four air check valves, depending on the model. We recommend replacing all of them at the same time to avoid having to make this repair as each fails. Valve replacement can be done with your spa either full or empty as detailed below:

Method 1 - With Spa Full of Water:

  • Step 1:

Make sure all the jets are open, and spa water is at the proper level. Turn the diverter knob to the middle position.

  • Step 2:

Locate the air check valves. Unscrew and remove all the pop check valves, (generally can be done by hand).

  • Step 4:

Turn the spa pump(s) on high speed and operate for 5 minutes. This should draw all the water from the open line.

    Step 5:

Move the caps leaving the next valve open and repeat Steps 3 & 4 for each remaining check valve line.

    Step 6:

    Turn off the pump(s).

    Step 7:

Remove caps and install all new check valves. Use Teflon tape for each fitting.

Method 2 - With Spa Empty:

  • Step 1:

Turn the diverter knob to the middle position, make sure all the jets are open.

  • Step 2:

Remove all the pop check valves.

  • Step 3:

Using either a small compressor (set at 10#), or a bicycle pump, blow through each line. This will flush out any water in the line.

    Step 4:

Install all new check valves. Remember to use Teflon tape for each fitting.

Note: For a Bay Series spa or Aquatic Fitness System, there are several groups of pop check valves. Perform these steps on the group that needs attention.
